Update -July 2007

After a break from the internet in general and a battle with a computer virus, I'm back to the blog. This posting is all about arts and crafts. As a mother and caregiver for a Grandma with dementia, I'm always looking for fun activities everyone can enjoy. The homemade clay recipe below is full of texture and a creative activity for kids over 3 years of age.

Sand Clay

2 cups sand
1 cup water
1 cup cornstarch

Mix in a pot over low heat until thickened. Allow to cool and mold as desired. This is not an edible clay. Decorate with treasures from the beach. Air dry for a day or two. Finished projects can be painted.

My mom taught us how to make clay with salt, flour, water and food coloring...can't remember the exact recipe, but it's probably pretty close to the one you publish. The thing that's great about homemade clay is that it's totally non-toxic and it dries well, so that whatever is made becomes permanent. We also used to use a crop or two of essential oil in the water for fragrance.
Hmmm...thanks for reminding me of this...I think my mother and I might be able to drum up some fun by trying to remember the recipe and making things!

Thanks for the info….I am trying to put together a list of what celebs are doing to help the environment. Ed Begley Jr. is having a sweepstakes where he flys you to Hollywood and gives you tips on how to go green ( http://www.earthlab.com/life/livingwithed/ ) Pretty crazy stuff. Obviously there are many others. Drop me a link if you have any on the top of your head. Thanks again for the info!
